What to do When You Can’t Make it Until Your Next Feeding


Every fall I gain weight. Not a lot, but enough to make me feel pudgy. I don’t try to stop it. I love indulging in extra hearty dishes and dry, rich, red wine. I love making Christmas pasta and macarons. I stick with my exercise routine, but I generously indulge in the treats and special foods of the season.

Because of my overindulgence, I always have a bit of extra work to do in January and February. This time of year is inundated with diets, exercise routines, fasts, and juices that (in my reality) are unrealistic. I don’t believe in putting a moratorium on food. It makes me hangry. So I do three things that get me back in fighting shape in no time. Maybe they will work for you too.

  • 1. Get back on an eating schedule. When I was a teacher, this was very easy for me because once holiday break was over, I was back on a bell schedule. Now that I am working from home, I struggle a bit more. So, whether you are at a 9-5 or your work schedule is more flexible, you can easily put yourself on an eating schedule. I eat at: 9:30, 12:30, 3, and 6. I do not snack in between, even if I am hungry. I PROMISE you will live even if your stomach starts growling. I also try to plan my meals in advance and eat the same things as much as possible.

  • Fasting Cardio. I am a morning exercise person, so this works perfect for me. I get up, I have two cups of coffee, then I do a cardio workout. Fasting cardio works because instead of burning what you just ate for breakfast, your body burns the reserves it has already stored. This works well for me. It’s not for everybody, so please listen to your body and only do what you can do.

  • Drink hot tea. In January and February I drink hot tea like it’s my job. I stock up on all types of flavors and anytime I feel like I can’t make it to my next feeding, I drink hot tea. It is calorie free, hydrating, warming (I don’t know about you but this winter has got me all kinds of chilly), and it has flavor so it makes me feel like I am having more than just water. Tricky tea. I usually drink caffeine-free, but if you liked to get amped, drink whatever variety you like.

  • Those are my simple, non-extreme ways to get back into the swing of things and be ready for that extravagant beach vacation that we will all be taking in April (wishful thinking). #gonnagetit
