Graduation Season is Here
I was a high school English teacher for ten years. Every day, I lived on a bell schedule from the moment my alarm went off at 5:15 in the morning until the time the dismissal bell rang at 3:04 (and no, I did not mean to say 3:05). This will be the first year that May will not bring the end of a school year for me; but my mind is still trained to believe May is the end of my work year and the beginning of a slower period of time. The warm weather and the longer evenings lend themselves toward grilling, lingering outside and chatting with friends and neighbors. Most nights feel like Friday night, to me, in the summer.
May marks the end of a long work season for students and teachers. My heart brims with pride for both this time of year. Whether graduating high school or college, the future ahead of these students will be undeniably different. I have had the privilege of working with incredible colleagues who have had a profound impact on hundreds, some of them thousands, of students. During this special time of year I would like to ask you to take a moment to thank the teachers who have given you or your child something to take into the next stage of life. I would also like you to say an encouraging word to someone who has accomplished the goal of graduation. Encouraging each other and celebrating success is a core part of love and friendship.
Get out there, stay active, be encouraging, and make sure to thank those who have helped you along the way. Now… time for those graduation parties!!!!!
P.S. Kippo shorts make a great graduation gift.
